Marcel received his undergraduate degree at San Francisco State University in Health Education with an emphasis in Community-Based Public Health. He is a second year Graduate Student in the MPH-Health Policy Leadership Program offered through University of San Francisco. Over the last seven years he has worked in community organizing, youth development and public policy on issues including, access to healthy foods, mental health advocacy, public housing, and many other social determinants of health.
Through his work with the Youth Leadership Institute in San Francisco, CA Marcel led coordination of Students for Healthy Neighborhoods and Community Transformative Initiatives. He implemented food justice curriculum across high school sites located in the Bayview and Mission districts and led social marketing campaigns around increased access to healthy foods. Marcel taught youth how to prepare healthy foods, conduct community participatory research and ultimately work with local store merchants to carry healthier food options in underserved neighborhoods.
Prior to his work in Youth Development and capacity building, Marcel was the Advocacy Manager for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) California. He worked with County Behavioral Health Departments throughout California to support, train and educate individuals and families impacted by mental illness. Marcel has led and coordinated numerous legislative advocacy visits in Sacramento on mental health issues. Over his four-year tenure with NAMI Marcel excelled in various positions including Statewide Organizer, Community Engagement Manager and Advocacy Manager.
Marcel is excited to work with the Public Health Institute as a Program and Policy Associate working on the Center for Wellness and Nutrition and CA4Health programs. In his role, he will be responsible for supporting opportunities to increase capacity building, information sharing, and advocacy actions.
He is originally from Santa Barbara, CA and is the oldest of 12 siblings. Marcel’s hobbies include cooking, hiking, fishing, and spending time with family.
