Overview:
Launched in 2018, the Farmers Market Initiative (FMI), also known as “Get More at the Farmers Market,” is a key project of the California Department of Social Services, CalFresh Healthy Living program. FMI supports low-income Californians access and enjoy fresh, local produce.

In partnership with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, FMI promotes Market Match, which doubles the value of CalFresh benefits when used at participating farmers markets, making healthy food more affordable.

By 2023, FMI became a flagship initiative within CalFresh Healthy Living, with counties launching their own programs and incorporating them into their Work Plans. Our team has supported this transition through webinars, updating program materials, and offering ongoing technical assistance. Additionally, on-site Food Navigators play a crucial role in the initiative, explaining Market Match, promoting other food benefits, and providing interactive nutrition education. Impact:
The FMI helps remove barriers faced by SNAP-eligible communities, such as a lack of familiarity with food assistance benefits. By raising awareness and providing support, the initiative boosts community engagement, maximizes food dollars, and promotes healthier eating habits, all while strengthening local farmers markets and economies.
