Client:
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Location:
Oaxaca, Mexico, and California, USA

Overview:
The Solidarity Beyond Borders project is a 15-month initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, aimed at developing community-driven solutions to enhance the health and resilience of Mixtec and Zapotec communities in California and Oaxaca. In collaboration with the Mixteca Indigena Community Organizing Project, Puente a la Salud Comunitaria, and Solidaridad International Kanda, our team is working to connect indigenous populations and community-based organizations across the US and Mexico. The project fosters engagement and cross-learning to address long-standing challenges, co-design and pilot approaches for convening these communities, and identify indicators of improved health, nutrition, and resilience.

Impact:
Despite Oaxaca’s agricultural wealth, over 60 percent of its indigenous population lives in poverty, and many Mixtec and Zapotec families migrate to California, where they face difficult working conditions. This project addresses these shared challenges by fostering cross-cultural exchange and collaboration. By creating platforms for mutual learning, Solidarity Beyond Borders empowers these communities to develop sustainable solutions, improving health, nutrition, and overall resilience in both regions.
