Advocating for Nutrition Incentive Programs
Overview:
Our affiliated program, Roots of Change, in collaboration with community-based organization partners statewide, achieved a significant milestone by securing a record-breaking $35 million in the FFY 23-24 California State Budget for the California Nutrition Incentive Program (CNIP). This program, administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, significantly supports California farmers and CalFresh beneficiaries. CNIP’s flagship initiative, Market Match, effectively doubles CalFresh benefits for fruits and vegetables purchased at farmers markets, encouraging healthier dietary choices. This advocacy success is the result of strategic collaboration with statewide community-based organizations, coalition partners, and active engagement with agency and elected officials, bolstered by impactful communication efforts including op-eds.
Impact:
The substantial increase in funding for CNIP represents a pivotal advancement in nutrition incentive programs, benefiting both local farmers and underserved communities. By doubling the value of CalFresh benefits at farmers markets, Market Match directly enhances access to fresh produce for vulnerable populations, promoting healthier eating habits. This advocacy milestone demonstrates the effectiveness of coalition-driven efforts and strategic policy engagement in driving meaningful, positive change in public health and nutrition support across California.
