Training Community Health Workers for Culturally Responsive Health Coaching
Overview:
Our team partnered with the Asian Pacific Self-Development and Residential Association (APSARA) to bolster their capacity for a Community Health Worker (CHW)-led health coaching intervention and research study. This initiative primarily served the Southeast Asian (Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong) population, as well as African American and Latino communities. Our health educators co-created a standardized healthy lifestyle intervention with APSARA CHWs, providing both formal and informal training to equip them with skills for effective health education, motivational support, and standardized approaches.
Impact:
CHWs are increasingly recognized for their culturally-embedded relationship skills in providing health education and addressing social determinants of health. Our support helped organizations achieve professional readiness and organizational capacity to qualify for Medicaid reimbursement of CHW services.
